Act East through the North-East - Mainstream Weekly

North Easterners should appreciate that present Modi Lead BJP government has taken the steps and declaring North East India as the Hearth for development and execution of Act East Policy. We should note the realistic assessment on the developmental focus that was may be look like an exaggeration. But in real sense we can observe the evidences of developmental edges in the North East India through the basic infrastructure.

The transport sector has got attention in the hilly and non hilly states, Modi is trying to push the road Cumming Trans Highway through the midst of hilly terrains. If we see the objectively the NEC could assess development through its study-  Transport
Plan for development of North Eastern Region, Feasibility Study on
comprehensive Power Transmission and Distribution in NE, Feasibility Study on
Poverty eradication in NER, Comprehensive Tourism Master Plan for NER , Health
Workforce Master Development Plan for NER, Study on Air Connectivity for NER,
and the NER Vision document 2020.

How much have been executed of these vision and missions for NE India is still a serious question.  We know, that there can not have any litmus test for measuring the development. Only we find the records, but by looking the records we should not get solace. Now is the time for execution. Modiji should not get distracted that for making North East Development, its green paradigm of its local  economy for international orientation can be the backbone. The strength of green and green economy must have to be capitalised by integrating any developmental plan. It the time for execution but not promise and solace.

It not that the government only can execute the visions for materialising the Act East Policy,  but  the public of the North East India and Institutions of North East India must come forward and support in realizing the vision and dream for development. Development mobilisation can be the priority for the present government.

Assam University celebrates first ever Researchers’ Day
 25 August 2013, (Sunday)
From our Correspondent
SILCHAR, August 24: The teachers and research scholars of Assam University celebrated today as Researchers’ Day with much gusto and enthusiasm. From now on, every year, Researchers’ Day will be held on August 24, one day ahead of ‘World Doctorates Day’, with a view to promote inter–disciplinary research works and social responsibility of researchers.
Dr Salim Ahmed Barbhuiya, faculty member, Curtin University, Australia, graced the occasion as the chief guest who delivered a wonderful lecture on the topic ‘Inter–disciplinary Research– Potential for Development’ at a function held at Jamshedji Tata Building of the department of Business Administration.
He underlined the importance of inter–disciplinary research in this 21st century. He was of the view that the integration of disciplines can prepare a workforce that can undertake challenges in innovative ways. Citing various examples, Dr Salim Ahmed Barbhuiya said that any intellectual, social and practical problems require inter–disciplinary approaches which are essential for development.
He at the same time, told the young researchers of Assam University present on the occasion to be flexible in their approaches and should be dynamic in nature. Dr Barbhuiya advised the students to conduct that kind of researches which have a social relevance. He extensively dwelt on the potentials and possibilities of research alliances and requirement of innovation for discharging the social responsibility by the researchers.
This unique initiative witnessed the presence of large number of research scholars from different disciplines of the varsity.

At the outset, the convener of today’s programme, Dr Arup Barman, associate professor of the department of Business Administration, Assam University, said that the researchers have enormous social responsibilities from which they could not run away. According to him, every research should “create the voice for actions in the interest of the society”.
He opined that Indian researchers have to put more efforts to do a quality researches which can help in resolving various problems that the country is facing.

In order to provide a platform to the young researchers of Assam University to discuss and debate over different issues, a new body– ‘Global Association for Inspiring Scholars’– was formed today. Dr Barbhuiya will support this initiative from Australia and Dr Barman will work from India. The body will hold different research related activities in coming days and will also celebrate Research Week.

This small but prolific programme was compered by Juthika Konwar, assistant professor of Business Administration department.
